Working in Camps

The temporary camp Mavrovouni on Lesvos and the new “closed controlled access center” Zervou on Samos are very different. Correspondingly, our work in each place is also diverse in nature.

  • After the fire in September 2020, a new temporary camp on Lesvos was built and has developed a lot in the past years. Currently (November 2022), around 1400 people live in different types of shelter units. We are involved, among other things, in shelter allocation, building, and maintenance projects. We also run a non-formal education program as well as extracurricular activities for children. Since August 2022, we are also responsible for the New Arrivals area. Our work has always been very hands-on and sometimes hectic but has been shifting recently as needs in the camp change. Since 2021, we see a shift towards more community engagement and are developing this area more.

On any given day, our team of international volunteers consists of about 70 people.

  • The camp and the work on Samos are very different. In September 2021, the new “closed controlled access center” was opened, and most physical needs of the residents were met. With a population of about 1,500, we concentrate on building a culture inside the camp and creating environments where residents can feel safe and be seen, heard, and valued. We offer conversations over tea and coffee as well as activities such as sports, education (informal), games, arts, and handcrafting.

As you apply with us, you can choose between volunteering on Lesvos, Samos, or “either.”

  • We are continuing to look into ways we can support groups of people in the outskirts of the big city—particularly communities who haven’t received much assistance yet. The needs change every day and our team on the ground is staying flexible to meet those needs.

Having the financial means and connections to address various—and varying—needs on the ground immediately is critical in a disaster setting like this. We are immensely grateful for all donations that are already making a difference on the ground.

  • The recent floods in central Greece have caused widespread devastation, leaving many families homeless and in need of urgent assistance. The floods have affected dozens of villages in the regions of Karditsa and Trikala, such as Palamas, Mouzaki, Sofades, Fylakti, Pyli, and many others. The flood waters have reached up to 3 meters high, destroying homes, crops, livestock, and infrastructure. The floods have also posed serious health risks, as the water is contaminated and not suitable for drinking.
